The Greatest Gift

It’s Christmas time. A time of giving gifts. Recently I was reminded of the greatest gift given, and it is why we celebrate Christmas.

“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; … And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

While listening to someone read Psalms 103:4-5, my attention caught on verse 5 where it states that God satisfies our desires with good things. Which made me recall James 1:17, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father”. Also, I recalled Matt. 7:11, “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”. This is what made me think of Jesus as being the best gift of all.

One of the definitions for satisfy is “to fulfill the requirement of”. You see, when sin entered our lives through our disobedience to God, we earned death. Romans 6:23 states “for the wages of sin is death.” It goes on to say “but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jehovah God, who satisfies (fulfills our requirement to him) us with good things, sent us His son Christ Jesus as a free gift for eternal life. Christ Jesus = the greatest gift of all.

Ephesians 2 tells us “we are all dead in our trespasses and sins “(verse 1). It goes on to define trespasses and sins as “gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts” (verse 3). Verses 4-5, “ But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ.” Christ Jesus = the greatest gift of all.

Just because you have a gift under the tree with your name on it, is it really yours until you receive it- open it and claim it? It is the same with the gift of salvation. It’s yours. It has your name on it. Your free gift. Romans 10:9 – 10 states “ if you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Remember, Matt. 7:11 states our Father God gives good gifts to those who ask. So ask for the greatest gift of all, Christ Jesus! And receive the free gift of eternal life.
